Before you buy
Pour it hot
Ember recommends pouring at 165°F or more. The mug keeps heat in; it is slow to heat a lukewarm drink.
Pick the size for your pour
The 10 oz runs about 10 minutes longer on battery. The 14 oz fits a full mug of coffee.
Watch the price
With the Mug 3 out, the Mug 2 is discounted. On October 7 Prime Day it fell to $76.50 (10 oz) and $100 (14 oz).
Check which generation you get
Mug 2 and Mug 3 listings look alike. Only the Mug 3 is dishwasher safe and has buttons on the mug.
What the Mug 2 gives up
The Mug 2 is now the older model, which is why it is cheaper. These are the trade-offs.
Hand wash only
The Mug 2 can be submerged but not put in the dishwasher. The Mug 3 is the first Ember mug that is top-rack dishwasher safe.
Short battery off the coaster
About 80 to 90 minutes at 135°F. Ember says a cold room, a cooler pour or milk can cut that a lot.
App for custom temperatures
Out of the box it holds 135°F. Picking another temperature needs the Ember app. The Mug 3 adds buttons on the mug.
No lid in the box
The Mug 3 includes a sliding lid. For the Mug 2 a lid is a separate purchase.
Tops out at 145°F
You can't set it hotter, and it does nothing for cold drinks.
10 oz, 14 oz, or the Mug 3?
Mug 2, 10 oz
For espresso drinks and smaller cups, with the longest battery.
Mug 2, 14 oz
The usual pick for a full mug of coffee or tea.
Mug 3, 14 oz
For dishwasher cleaning, on-mug controls and an included lid.
On Amazon the 14 oz Mug 2 was $119.99 (list $149.95) in mid-October, and Target had some colours at $99.99. During October 6-7 Prime Day the 10 oz dropped to $76.50 and the 14 oz to $100. The Mug 3 reached Amazon in mid-October at full price. Prices move, so check today's price before you buy.
