Before you buy
Check your iPhone first
Update to iOS 26.2.1 or later. If you have an iPhone 11 to 14, the AirTag works, just with the shorter Precision Finding range.
Budget for a holder
Without a hole, it needs a key ring holder, loop or luggage tag. Old first-gen AirTag holders fit.
Buy the four-pack for travel
One for keys, one for a backpack and two for suitcases is the common setup, and it brings the price to about $25 each.
Mixed-phone family?
If anyone in the house uses Android, a tracker that works on both networks, like Pebblebee or Chipolo, avoids a second app.
What to know before you buy
The second AirTag fixes range and volume. The rest is the same as before.
iPhone only
Setup and finding happen in Apple's Find My app. Android phones can't use it.
Best range needs a new iPhone
The longer Precision Finding range needs an iPhone 15 or later. Older iPhones back to the iPhone 11 still find it, at the shorter range.
No hole for keys
You need a key ring holder or loop. Apple's own holder costs more than the tag, and cheaper ones are easy to find.
Not GPS
It reports its location when Apple devices pass near it. In a remote place it may not update for a while.
Same shape as before
It looks almost the same as the first model. Old holders fit, but the two are hard to tell apart.
Built-in anti-stalking alerts
People near an AirTag that isn't theirs get an alert. That protects against misuse, and it also means it is not a hidden tracker.
One or four?
1 pack
For keys or one bag. Often a few dollars less on Amazon.
4 pack
About $25 each. The better buy for keys, a backpack and two suitcases.
Apple lists the AirTag (2nd generation) at $29 and $99 since its January 26, 2026 launch, and Amazon and Walmart have sold it for around $24 each. Apple no longer sells the first-generation AirTag. Prices move, so check today's price before you buy.
