Before you buy
Check your TV's USB port
Direct Power needs a TV USB port that supplies enough power. If yours does not, budget $19.99 for Amazon's adapter.
Check your must-have apps
Vega has fewer apps than Android-based Fire TV. Shudder was missing at launch, and DIRECTV listed only the older Vega stick when we checked.
Want Dolby Vision or Kodi?
Buy the Fire TV Stick 4K Max. It is the last Fire TV stick on sale that runs Android-based Fire OS.

Amazon cut the new stick to $29.99 in early October 2026, half its list price.
What Amazon cut
The new stick is slimmer and Amazon says it is faster. These are the trade-offs that came with it.
No Dolby Vision
It is the first Fire TV Stick 4K without Dolby Vision since the line began in 2018. It supports HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG.
Vega OS is closed
It cannot run Android apps or sideloaded APKs, so Kodi and similar apps are out. Amazon says it has added over 2,000 Vega apps, including Spotify, Xbox and VLC, but some apps are still missing.
Fewer things in the box
Earlier 4K sticks came with a wall adapter and an HDMI extender. Now they cost $19.99 and $5.99, and a longer power cable is $9.99.
Half the RAM
It has 1 GB of RAM. In Gadget Hacks' roundup it kept 3 apps in memory versus 5 on the Onn 4K Plus, and took about 5 seconds to wake versus about 2.
Speed claims are Amazon's
Amazon says it gets to content 20 to 40% faster than a similarly priced 4K stick from another brand. It gave no comparison with its own older sticks.
The cable sits on the side
The side-mounted power cable can block a neighboring HDMI or USB port on some TVs.
