Before you buy
Wait for a sale
The Pop lists at $39.99 but has sold for $24.99 or less during Amazon sales, and Black Friday is close.
Check your Prime status
Alexa+ comes with Prime. Without it, Alexa+ costs $19.99 a month, and the speaker still works with standard Alexa.
Count your smart home gear
If you own Zigbee bulbs or sensors, you need a hub. The Pop handles Matter only, so the Echo Dot Max may save you a separate hub.
Aim it into the room
The half-sphere aims sound forward, so face the front toward where you sit.
What to know before you buy
The Echo Pop is the cheapest way into Alexa. These are the trade-offs.
Small sound
It has one 1.95-inch driver and no woofer. The Echo Dot Max adds a 2.5-inch woofer and a tweeter.
No sensors
The Echo Dot 5th gen has a temperature sensor and motion detection for routines. The Pop has neither.
No Zigbee hub
It works as a Matter controller, but Zigbee devices need a hub such as the Echo Dot Max.
Wall power only
There is no battery or aux port. Battery bases are sold separately as accessories.
Alexa+ costs extra without Prime
Alexa+ is included with Prime. Without Prime it is $19.99 a month.
